James Howden founded Howden in 1854 as a marine engineering business, and it was his early inventions that enabled the steam ships of his era to reduce their energy consumption by nearly 50%.

Howden believes in making a difference by building a positive and enduring legacy in the communities in which its colleagues live and work. In 2021, Howden introduced its Bright Futures programme which helps disadvantaged and under-represented people in local communities realise their full potential and help build a more sustainable future for all. Since the programme launched, 80% of Howden’s major sites around the world have actively developed programmes and 11% of Howden colleagues are already involved in volunteering in these local community activities.
